Cooperation can be complex;
our job is to make it easier.

Selection and assessment

Project selection is a defining moment for both projects and programmes. Within the Interreg narrative, each selected project represents a tangible outcome of cooperation and contributes to building a better Europe. Once approved, a project becomes a lasting product of Interreg.

The core objective of selection is to ensure that the best projects—those offering strong value for money—are chosen. These projects should contribute effectively to achieving the programme’s objectives, as set out in the programme document. Equally important is the need for a fair and transparent selection process, safeguarding against conflicts of interest and ensuring that any complaints are handled appropriately.

Following a report by the European Court of Auditors, this topic has gained increased attention across Interreg programmes.

Where to start

A fact sheet and briefing note on the project selection process outline the main steps involved, as well as key challenges faced by programmes at each stage.

Examples of programme practices concerning project selection and  quality verification

Interact Academy offers different trainings to programme stakeholders connected to manage projects on the programme level. Check Academy website for further information.

For conflicts of interest, guidance from the European Commission provides an overview of the most important principles and requirements.

In addition, the fact sheet on complaints  explains the legal framework and presents options for effectively addressing complaints.

What we are working on

Interact Academy offers a training on "Interreg Project Assessment, Monitoring and Verification" allowing potential participants gain comprehensive overview of the project assessment, monitoring and verification processes which would allow for projects to be effectively implemented at programme level. The focus of the training is on the daily work of a project and/or finance officer in an Interreg programme.

Interact is facilitating ongoing exchange between programmes in particular on value for money in the project life cycle, Programmes are always welcome either Robert or Besiana
