Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly reshaping day-to-day programme work across Interreg. Interact offers various services to bring the Interreg community up to speed with developments and ensure transfer of knowledge.
Where to start
What AI means for Interreg (the essentials)
Through various services, we introduce key concepts (e.g., models vs. tools), how to use, hands on demos, current capabilities and limits, typical risks (privacy, ethics, bias), and where AI already adds value to programme tasks. Our interventions distinguish between:
- Online chatbots (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Claude) for daily work; and
- Integrated AI solutions embedded in systems/processes for longer-term, resource-intensive tasks (e.g., elements of monitoring & evaluation).
The two main types of services we currently provide to build the knowledge base are certified training and exclusive AI event, details of which are outlined below.
What we are working on
Certified trainings
Generative AI for Interreg communication (available in the Interact Academy): This training focuses on live demos, real programme examples, and “tips & tricks” for better results (structuring prompts, architecture of different AI tools) as well as safe, effective use of AI for communication tasks (prompting, authenticity, privacy, human oversight) and hands-on practice. Two cohorts have been completed with further editions planned, usually in April every year.
Exclusive AI events
Dedicated webinars and workshops focused on the practical use of AI in Interreg for day-to-day programme management purposes, as well as integrated solutions to programme systems and processes. We combine short briefings with live demonstrations and peer exchange, so participants can test tools, discuss risks and safeguards, and see real-life examples.
A major workshop on the general use of AI in Interreg took place in November 2025.
There are also several examples of Informative AI webinars available in our past events. (for example)
AI sessions inside Interact events
Interact is embedding AI interventions across relevant events (ICON, InterFIN, CAP&COM, Regional Networks, IKF, beneficiary support, etc.), with increasing focus on programme-to-programme knowledge sharing.
Support to the European Commission
Interact contributes AI-communication inputs to INFORM EU and ESF+ communities and will continue supporting EC networking and training activities as needed and requested.
Focused content scope
To keep exchanges practical and actionable, our content stays anchored to Interreg’s needs and responsibilities, with strong emphasis on ethics, legality, and privacy. Topic set includes: basic AI architecture; terminology; issues/concerns; text, image, video and other creation tools; Interreg examples, and hands-on good practice.
Our Internal preparations to tackle AI
Interact continues to tracks developments and proposes services. We are also exploring a pilot “Interact AI chatbot” (internal demonstration only) trained on Interact knowledge to test value, limits, and feasibility for future AI projects.
Next steps & pilots for Interreg
We are committed to supporting Interreg programmes in navigating their way through the technological realities of our day. We closely follow the developments in the field of AI that may have an impact on the way Interreg colleagues manage the programmes.
We plan to continue making field-specific interventions (e.g., communication, management, finance, content) as well as joint and comprehensive interventions (e.g., general use of AI in Interreg).
As developments in the field of AI are rather unpredictable, we continue to keep an eye on such developments and come up with timely interventions based on the programme needs.
Current pilot plans for Interreg include:
AI for Interreg core group with knowledgeable and experienced programme staff to identify joint AI actions and transfer of knowledge.
AI Guidelines for Interreg for inspirations on ethical and responsible use of AI in day-to-day programme management.
AI exchange space for relevant and interesting updates and exchanging of practice among programmes.
