Interreg for Urban Sustainable Mobility
The Interreg for a Greener Europe webinar series provides a regular platform for the Interreg community to exchange insights on Policy Objective 2 (PO2) topics. Each session spotlights a key theme where territorial cooperation delivers unique added value.
This edition will focus on sustainable urban mobility. More than 70% of EU citizens live in urban areas, which generate 23% of transport greenhouse gas emissions. Transforming mobility is therefore central to climate neutrality and quality of life. It calls for accessible public transport, walking and cycling, cleaner and shared mobility, efficient urban logistics, and seamless first- and last-mile connections.
Yet cities face persistent challenges: car dependence, congestion, emissions, air and noise pollution, road safety risks, and unequal access to affordable mobility. Fragmented governance, limited capacity and financing, and coordination across boundaries can slow implementation. The revised TEN-T framework, requiring 431 urban nodes to adopt Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans by the end of 2027, creates fresh momentum to turn integrated planning into action.
Interreg helps territories act together, test solutions and transfer approaches across borders. This webinar will showcase practical responses and discuss how to scale, embed and sustain them.
Objectives
Strengthen understanding of current urban mobility challenges and the opportunities offered by integrated, people-centred approaches.
Clarify the EU policy framework, including the EU Urban Mobility Framework, revised TEN-T requirements and Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning.
Highlight concrete Interreg approaches, from piloting and demonstration to transfer, policy uptake and scale-up.
Explore the added value of territorial cooperation for connecting functional urban areas, urban-rural territories and cross-border mobility systems.
Stimulate reflection on how programmes can support cleaner, safer, more accessible and affordable mobility through their strategies, calls and capitalisation work.
